What Makes a Good Running Shoe? Depends On Your Running Style

How one defines what is “good” varies from person to person…especially when it comes to footwear. Finding the right pair of running shoes can be a challenge. Thankfully, we’re here to help you answer the question: what makes a good running shoe?

What Makes a Good Running Shoe?

What makes a good running shoe? That varies by person—and depends on how you run, what exercises you choose to pair with running, and what’s comfortable for you. First, let’s discuss how you run.

Running Styles: How Do You Run?

To answer, what makes a good running shoe, you must first ask yourself how you run. To determine how you run, we must discuss and assess your degree of pronation, or how much your feet roll in after landing. Critical to proper shock absorption, your foot must land and push off properly to avoid injury.

Pronation

Pronation is a normal degree of rolling. When the outside part of your heel makes initial contact with the ground, you have normal pronation. The foot “rolls” inward—it comes in complete contact with the ground and can support your body weight without any problem. Then, you push off evenly from the front of the foot. Everything goes off smoothly.

Foot type: Normal arches

Wear pattern: Sole of your running shoes show an S-shape wear pattern

Recommended shoes: Neutral running shoes (for neutral pronated runners)

Overpronation (or Supination)

Overpronation (also known as supination) follows the same process as regular pronation—however, when the heel makes contact with the ground, the foot rolls inward more. With overpronation, the foot and ankle have a problem stabilizing your body. To push off the ground and keep moving as an overpronator, you’ll use your big toe and second toe only, which can put a lot of unnecessary pressure on that area of your foot.

Foot type: Low arches (or flat feet)

Wear pattern: Inside of the heel and under the ball of the foot, especially the big toe show wear

Recommended shoes: Stability shoes (for mild to moderate overpronation) or motion control shoes (moderate to severe overpronation)

Underpronation (AKA Supination)

With underpronation, the outside of the heel makes initial contact with the ground. However, when the heel makes contact with the ground, the foot doesn’t roll inward quite enough. The impact is then concentrated on the outside area of the foot only. To push-off, you use the smaller toes on the outside of the foot putting a lot of unnecessary pressure on that area of your foot.

Foot type: High arches

Wear pattern: Outside of your running shoes show the wear

Recommended shoes: Cushioned running shoes (for mild to moderate overpronation)

Running Styles: Where Do You Run?

Part of what makes a good running shoe is understanding that not all running shoes are created equal. Road running and trail running require different technologies found in different running shoes—here’s what you’d need for each.

Road Running Shoes

Road running shoes are designed to keep you moving on the pavement. Cushioned and supportive, road running shoes have your comfort in mind knowing that you will be striding along on hard surfaces.

Trail Running Shoes

Trail running shoes offer extra support and stability technology that’s helpful when running on rocks, grass, and dirt. Adding enhanced tread for a more solid traction, trail shoes have your safety in mind.

Cross-training Shoes

Cross-training shoes are great for the gym and in-studio workouts. Running might be involved in your cross-training workout, but so is weight training and balance—with these you want more contact with the ground, and thus, thinner soles.
